February 27, 2024
On 26 February 2024, the Forum of Social Ministry of the Kyiv-Halych Metropolis of the UGCC “Interaction for Sustainability” was held at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv, where about a hundred participants from different parts of Ukraine discussed in detail the peculiarities of the Church’s social ministry in times of war.
One of the speakers of the panel discussion was Fr Lyubomyr Yavorskyy, Patriarchal Econome of the UGCC and head of the Patriarchal Foundation Mudra Sprava.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav: to check the coordinates of our ministry
The Forum was attended by the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav. He emphasised that the Metropolis is currently serving the most wounded parts of Ukraine, and this event is an opportunity to confirm the Church’s desire to serve as long as necessary.
“Today we, in the heart of our Kyiv Metropolis, will be able to once again synchronise the coordinates of our ministry with you. Two years of hard, terrible war for the Church is the time of another front. The social ministry of the Church in times of war has indeed turned into a humanitarian front,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.
Bishop Vasyl Tuchapets: housing reconstruction, demining and children
In his introductory speech, Bishop Vasyl Tuchapets highlighted that the Social Ministry Forum is a great opportunity for priests and community representatives to discuss and analyse the needs of people who were at the beginning of the war and the challenges we face today.
Bishop Vasyl Tuchapets emphasised the importance of helping people rebuild their homes in the areas liberated from Russian troops and the need to clear the territories of mines. In addition, the Head of the UGCC Social Ministry Department noted the urgent need to help children from the frontline areas to psychologically survive the war.
Father Lyubomyr Yavorskyy: building synergy
The speakers of the panel discussions during the Forum were Tetiana Stawnycha, President of Caritas Ukraine, Lyubomyr Yavorskyy, Patriarchal Econome of the UGCC, Mariana Kashchak, Director of the Ukrainian Educational Platform, Yuriy Maletsky, National Delegate of the Knights of Columbus in Ukraine, and synkels of social service of the archdiocese and exarchates of the Kyiv-Halych Metropolis of the UGCC.
“We unite to serve and help people in need. Once again, I experience the unity and desire of our Church to embrace with support and service each and every one of those who are suffering today because of the Russian war against Ukraine. Once again, as the head of the Patriarchal Foundation Mudra Sprava, I have demonstrated the desire to build creative synergy between active deans and agents of change — the Charitable Foundation Caritas Ukraine, the Ukrainian Educational Platform and the Fraternal Community of the Knights of Columbus. Once again, I was convinced of the resilience of our Church, which is finding its role and hope for the restoration of Ukraine in social service.
