“Miracles of Christmas” near the Patriarchal Cathedral: Saint Nicholas residence opens in Kyiv
December 6, 2025
On December 6, the feast of Saint Nicholas, the Saint Nicholas Residence—a Christmas space titled “Miracles of Christmas”—officially opened near the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv.

For the second consecutive year, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, together with the Mudra Sprava Patriarchal Foundation, has created a haven of joy, light, and kindness for children, especially those affected by the war.
The celebration traditionally began with children meeting St. Nicholas at his residence. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the musical accompaniment of the military band of the National Defense University of Ukraine. Before the opening, participants honored Ukraine’s heroes with a minute of silence. This was reported by the UGCC Information Department.

The Patriarchal Christmas space will operate until December 21. During this time, it will host children from displaced families, orphans, and all those in need of support and the warmth of the upcoming holidays. The program includes a festive tree lighting, meetings with St. Nicholas, and a theatrical Christmas performance.
“This space is the embrace of a Church that heals wounds,” — Fr. Yaroslav Valyukh
Father Yaroslav Valyukh, a staff member of the Patriarchal Economate, emphasized the spiritual mission of the initiative:
“’Christmas Miracles’ is a space where children can experience the care of their Mother Church. It is a fairy-tale setting, but at its heart, it is a place where the Church heals wounds, brings peace, and offers love. Children today feel the pain and darkness of war, so we want them to find protection and light here.”

The priest noted that the initiative is carried out with the blessing of His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the UGCC. Even while in Australia for the Permanent Synod, His Beatitude emphasized that the residence must remain open for the children.
According to Fr. Yaroslav, this event is made possible by the Mudra Sprava team, benefactors, and volunteers. For the second time, the project received support from the Archeparchy of Philadelphia. This year, the campaign became church-wide, supported by the “Peter’s Pence” (Andrew’s Pence) financial collection from every eparchy and exarchate.
“For many children, this is an island of light,” — Project Coordinator Svitlana Buhay
Svitlana Buhay, coordinator of the “Miracles of Christmas” project, noted that the Christmas space was created primarily for children who have experienced loss, forced displacement, or the traumatic events of war:
“We invite children who have lost parents, endured relocation, or simply need extra attention. These are the categories of children who especially need our care today. For many of them, this may be their first encounter with a small island of happiness.”

She also highlighted the unique atmosphere of the location:
“Being here at the Patriarchal Center is a special blessing. When children arrive, they transform—joy appears in their eyes. Thanks to our donors and everyone involved, we give them the chance to experience the childhood they deserve.”
The Light of Christmas for every child
The Patriarchal Saint Nicholas Residence and the “Miracles of Christmas” space have become a place where children and their families can feel the warmth of the Church, the support of the community, and the joy of awaiting the Nativity of Christ.
The organizers emphasize that the primary goal is to provide children with a peaceful environment where they can simply be children, celebrate the holiday, and find the hope that is so vital during wartime.
