February 27, 2024

270 families living in the village of Zelenivka, who were affected by the Russian war against Ukraine, received humanitarian aid in the form of hygiene kits. The assistance was provided by the Patriarchal Foundation Mudra Sprava and Fr Igor Makar, priest of the local UGCC community of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in cooperation with the Kherson City Military Administration.

867 hygiene kits delivered to affected families in Kherson region

Russian aggressors continue to destroy the homes and lives of residents of the Kherson region. On 23 February, electricity networks in Kherson were damaged as a result of overnight shelling by the Russian Federation. A total of 45 settlements in the region were cut off from electricity. On 24 February, the Russian army shelled the Kherson region 20 times. On 25 February, the Russian army fired artillery and mortars at about 15 settlements in the Kherson region. This is the current military reality on the right bank of the Kherson region. The left bank is still occupied.

In total, the Patriarchal Foundation Mudra Sprava handed over 867 hygiene kits for the needy residents of the frontline Kherson region. They were delivered through the efforts of the UGCC Logistics Center to the parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zelenivka.

According to local priest Igor Makar, who also coordinates the provision of humanitarian aid, in addition to Zelenivka, hygiene kits were delivered to the Korabelny district of Kherson, to the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Fedorivka, to St Nicholas parish in Soniachne village, to the parish of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Muzykivka village, to the parish of Saints Cyprian and Martyr Justina in Antonivka village and to the parish of St Michael the Archangel in Inzhenerne village.

Most of those affected are elderly, who cannot evacuate and do not want to leave the homes they have spent their lives building and caring for. This humanitarian aid is therefore vital for them today. At the same time, it is a sign of the closeness of the Church and the solidarity of others, as well as an assurance that they will not be forgotten.

The purchase and assembly of these hygiene kits was supported by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and concerned Americans at their own expense.
